Consumer online commerce investing is BROKEN.  Nasty Gal and Warby Parker are hits, but most brands that launch online fail to understand consumer psychology as well as the value of branding, marketing and great product; they are struggling.

What does it take to create a true long-lasting online commerce brand success online? Nasty Gal’s Founder Sophia Amoruso struggled for a long time before finally being courted by VCs. How can seed stage investors learn to recognize true talent like Sophia sooner? Investors are used to valuing companies with traditional metrics like Customer Acquisition Cost and Lifetime Value, but do VC’s know how to really measure and value a brand? Does domain expertise matter at all? Come find out.

This event is a part of a series of events created with the purpose sparking a long overdue paradigm shift in the startup ecosystem. Look forward to a no holds barred discussion, instead of smoke and mirrors. No pandering, no BS – just raw conversation. Connect, learn, grow.

The First Open Source Hardware Documentation Jam – April 26-28, NYC

The First Open Source Hardware Documentation Jam – April 26-28, NYC

Brief-illustrations-31The First Open Source Hardware Documentation Jam
Location: ITP-NYU Tisch Common Room
721 Broadway
New York, NY 10003
Dates: April 26-28

With fashion being an important part of the Open Hardware industry, we are excited for the jam and hope that many of you will participate!

The Event: Given the wide scope of the challenges, this 3 day event will be based on a mash-up of well known design and collaborative creation formats for group cooperation such as Service Design Jams (http://www.designjams.org/) and Hackathons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackathon) and will borrow from unconferences and barcamps as well.  All the format will be developed and open-sourced right after.

Why people should attend:  It will be a great opportunity to learn, build relationships and start new projects. They are looking for several different profiles, as the challenge behind the mission of the event – improving the way OSHW is designed and documented to enhance reuse, replication, remix – is huge and implies a large set of skills.

In parallel with the Jam works, the event will feature several breakout session to pitch projects and get feedback from insiders and early adopters and spark new collaborations.  The agenda spans on three days and there’s no strict demand for full time commitment but consistent participation is welcome.

Register now: http://nyc_oshwdocjam.eventbrite.com/  (see: www.opensourcewarehouse.org for details).

The hosts team includes TED fellows Marcin Jakuboski (Open Source Ecology) and Catarina Mota (Open Materials, Open Hardware Summit Association) plus many more.

OSF Interview: Mike & Nathaniel of Tip Or Skip

OSF Interview: Mike & Nathaniel of Tip Or Skip

Tip or Skip was founded by Mike Weiksner and Nathaniel McNamara, childhood friends and experts in social and m-commerce. Tip or Skip is based in the heart of the fashion district in NYC.

Q: What was the inspiration behind Tip or Skip?

Nathaniel: After years as an entrepreneur involved in mobile commerce and online advertising, I was working as a venture capitalist. I was becoming increasingly interested in the power of social networks to drive traffic and when Facebook opened up its application platform and I heard about the results from Mike’s research I knew there was a huge opportunity ahead combining the power of social networks and applying it to shopping.

Mike: People often think that virality only happens by chance when someone captures something like a silly pet trick on video. At Stanford, my research shows that persuasion in social networks actually happens in repeatable patterns (Read Mike’s research here: “Six Patterns of Persuasion in Online Social Network“). By applying these patterns, students in my class were able to create applications that were installed by 10 million people in just ten weeks. The inspiration for Tip or Skip comes from this research.

Q: What’s the objective of the game?

Mike: The object of Tip or Skip is to be recognized as a top tastemaker by spotting great products! Tip what you like, skip what you don’t. If your followers agree, you earn points called “sway.” Players and products with the most sway rise to the top.

Q: Can you share an example of a top tastemakers and how they’ve been successful?

Mike: Rona Luo, a dressmaker in Hong Kong, discovered Tip or Skip and then tipped several of her dresses. The response to her products is amazing. She has garnered over six thousand followers on Tip or Skip, and one of her products has gained over 1,500 “retips” (positive votes by other players) alone. She is cultivating a large, engaged audience around her products.

Nathaniel: We also have a broad selection of people using the platform, from fashion bloggers to college students, tipping everything you can imagine. From the most beautiful dresses to the best additions to a man cave. Nearly everything has an audience on our platform – or you can help create the audience!

Q: How do you engage users?

Mike: The key is simplicity. Tip or Skip is “hot or not” for products. It’s an endless stream of beautiful, full-screen product images that load quickly. Try it– you’ll love it!

Nathaniel: The overall results are terrific and the numbers are compelling. Users play 57 rounds of Tip or Skip (i.e., product evaluations) on their first visit. Overall, Tipsters played over 750,000 rounds in October, which is double how many rounds they played in September.

Q: As Tip or Skip attracts more and more users, how do you envision working with brands?

Mike: Tip or Skip is becoming a personalized Fab – a place where you can connect with brands from literally anywhere, and even help discover the next hot products.

Nathaniel: By creating a presence on Tip or Skip, great brands can naturally garner significant exposure for themselves and their products for free. If they want to accelerate this process, we can assist them by featuring certain brands and products. For example, Theory has garnered over 20,000 followers in three weeks as a featured brand. Coming soon, we’ll also assist brands in converting this exposure into sales.

Q: What are plans to monetize the app? How soon do you plan to start monetizing?

Mike: To be clear, we don’t charge to play Tip or Skip and Tip or Skip will always be free to play.

Nathaniel: A few ideas that we are planning to test soon:

  1. Instant buying. Perhaps the most common feedback we receive is “I need to buy what I tipped!” Our buying experience on third party sites is crummy, and we can make e-commerce revenue if we sell directly on our site.
  2. Sway deals and giveaways. Our users would like to get benefits for being a great tipster, and brands are asking us how they can reward their best advocates. We can charge brands to identifies their influential advocates and provide these rewards to them.
  3. Provide price drop and other alerts pertaining to your tips, to help you get the best deals on the products you desire.
  4. Kickstarter for fashion– provide brands analytics about what influential people desire so they can make the products they want!

We see are these opportunities and many more to help connect buyers and sellers and earn a little for ourselves for improving the digital shopping experience for everyone! It’s early days, but our users and brands are clamoring to connect with each other on mobile social platforms like Tip or Skip.

OSF Recap: The Brooklyn Night Bazaar 2012

OSF Recap: The Brooklyn Night Bazaar 2012

I had Friday, November 23rd blocked out in my calendar three weeks in advance. That’s how excited I was to check out the opening night of the 2012 Brooklyn Night Bazaar. The Night Bazaar takes place in Williamsburg for five consecutive weekends (Friday & Saturday nights). I can best describe it as a finely decorated warehouse filled with interesting local artisanal items for sale, sprinkled with a fair share of entertainment. A great place to start and finish your holiday shopping, all while treating yourself to excellent food & drink. Not in the shopping mood? Grab a seat on a picnic table and listen to live music, release some energy on the ping pong tables, or play some indoor soccer. Good people, good fun, and very Brooklyn… my kind of evening.

Here are a few of my highlights:

Shopping: I’m not huge on jewelry, though there was some great jewelry designers showcasing their collections. I gravitated to clothing, personal goods, and artwork. Here are just a few of the notable companies at the Brooklyn Bazaar on opening night:

The Vanity Project – I was initially drawn to the cool designs on the t-shirts and hoodies they had on display. While talking to the guys– all whom were real chill–about their company, I found out the great story behind their company! They team up with non-profit organizations, then stylize and print the non-profits’ logos onto high quality garments. Besides spreading awareness for a wide array of great organizations, they give back 51% of the profits from sales to the respective communities. Brilliant! I bought the BKYC hoodie, and a super soft Music is Medicine v-neck t-shirt. No joke, I’ve already gotten a  ton of compliments on both purchases. The hoodie has become an everyday wear for me. You should absolutely check them out online or visit them at the next bazaar on Saturday, December 8th.

Carrier Pigeon - There’s something about a pigeon carrying a semi-automatic weapon that makes me smile. Great play on words! Take a closer look at this company and you’ll find that Carrier Pigeon is a quarterly magazine that showcases a collection of illustrated fiction and fine art from a great community of artists. Collaboration at its finest– reminds me of another community magazine that I’m near and dear to. You can purchase the magazine from their website, it’s a great addition to your coffee table. Also available are t-shirts screened with images of artwork from their collection of works.

Bobby Hill (Reset Universe) – Bobby Hill is an extremely talented artist. He has a unique style of screening canvases, which are seemingly inspired from NYC culture, and politics. He has thousands of prints available at the BK Market from $15-$45 (a great gift price point). I was overjoyed to look through all of his prints presented. I can’t wait to outfit a wall of my apartment with his works!  If I owned a restaurant, hotel or lounge I would be reaching out to Bobby Hill for his “Billboard” sized collection, that start at $2,200 (very well priced in my opinion). After learning more from his website, I learned that Bobby has worked with a ton of notable personalities and brands including Ecko, Coca-Cola, Source Mag, and Jay-Z. You must check his work out and meet Bobby, he’s incredibly friendly, humble, and approachable!

Mullein & Sparrow Herbal Apothecary – I’m the son of a talented aesthetician. Having grown up around the beauty industry, I have a true appreciation of earths natural beauty and health remedies. Mullein & Sparrow is a company launched in Brooklyn within this past year. They hand craft items made to improve your bodies inner and outer health. You can find a great gift for anyone that appreciates their body, and believes in naturopathic approaches to healing.   From teas and spices, to shampoos, creams, and serums– all of their items are made in small batches, with extreme attention to quality. Pick up a product or two for yourself, or a gift set for your secret Santa

Those are my product picks from the opening weekend,  keep in mind that vendors sign up on a day to day basis at the Bazaar.  I plan to go back this weekend to see what else I can dig up!

Other Points of Interest at the BK Bazaar:

- Craft Beer by BluePoint Brewery, SixPoint Brewery, and wine by Brooklyn Vineyard.

- Though I did not get a chance to eat, there was all kinds of deliciousness going on.  I was shocked to see a host of vendors serving up some serious fresh seafood.

- Live Music produced by FADER

I suggest you check out the Bazaar one of these weekends, it’s a great low-key evening!
